On the lines of ‘AatmaNirbhar Bharat’, The Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO) Defence Laboratory, Jodhpur (DLJ), Rajasthan and High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL), Pune (Maharashtra) have developed an advanced Chaff material and chaff cartridge-118/I for Indian Air Force (IAF).
- This technology will safeguard IAF fighter jets against hostile radar threats.
- IAF will induct this technology after successful user trials.
What is the advanced chaff technology?
It is an electronic Counter Measure Dispensing System (CMDS) to protect defence assets, like naval vessels and aircraft by providing passive jamming against Infra-Red, radio frequency and radar threats to ensure survivability of aircraft.
- A very less quantity of chaff material is deployed in the air which will mislead or deflect the enemy’s missiles.
- Chaff is composed of many small aluminium or zinc coated fibres. It will be stored on-board the aircraft as cartridges.
Point to be noted:
Few months back, DLJ developed a similar technology in three variants for naval ships to protect them from missile attacks. The three variants are:
- Short Range Chaff Rocket (SRCR)
- Medium Range Chaff Rocket (MRCR)
- Long Range Chaff Rocket (LRCR)
The Indian Navy conducted trials of all three variants in the Arabian Sea with successful results.
