Indian Naval Ship (INS) Talwar visited Mombasa, Kenya to participate in Exercise Cutlass Express 2021 (CE21). The Annual Maritime Exercise is to be conducted from 26 July, 2021 to 6th August, 2021 along the East Coast of Africa.
- The Exercise is sponsored by the U.S. Africa Command and conducted by U.S. Naval Forces Africa. Indian Navy is participating in the exercise in a ‘trainer role’.
- 13 nations – Comoros, Djibouti, Georgia, India, Kenya, Mozambique, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, United Kingdom, and the US are participating in the exercise.
- Various International organisations like International Maritime Organisation (IMO), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Interpol, European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR), Critical Maritime Routes Indian Ocean (CRIMARIO) and EUCAP Somalia are also participating in the exercise.
- The main objective of the exercise is to promote national and regional maritime security in East Africa and the Western Indian Ocean.
Key Points
i.It aims to enhance the combined maritime law enforcement capacity, promote national & regional security, and increase interoperability between the regional navies of Eastern Africa.
ii.TheIndian Navy will train contingents of participation nations in various fields across the spectrum of maritime security operations.
iii.Information sharing and information flow between various partner countries will be one of key focus areas of the exercise.
- India’s Information Fusion Centre – Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) is also participating in the exercise.
Indian Navy & Kenya Navy to enhance ties
During INS Talwar’s visit to Mombasa the Indian Navy will undertake various interactions with the Kenya Navy. It will host a number of events to enhance bilateral ties with Kenya, Indian community.
