electronically transmit bail and other ordersThe Chief Justice of India (CJI) Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana led bench has initiated a secure electronic transmission mechanism namely FASTER (Fast and Secure Transmission of Electronic Records) that will fast forward the process of bail i.e. instantaneous delivery of Supreme Court (SC) orders to concerned prisons, District Courts, High Courts through a secure communication channel in order to save time and efforts.

  • The bench also had Justices Lavu Nageswara Rao and Ajjikuttira Somaiah (AS) Bopanna.
  • FASTER’s objective is to communicate all orders to concerned jail authorities without waiting.

Key Point:

The Supreme Court Registry has been directed by the Bench to prepare a detailed report of a scheme.  It will be submitted by Secretary General of SC, Sanjeev S. Kalgaonkar within two weeks.

Reason behind initiation of FASTER:

i.The issue came up during the hearing of the matter where SC has taken suo motu cognizance of delay on the part of Uttar Pradesh (UP) authorities in releasing 13 prisoners who were granted bail by it on July 8, 2021.

  • The convicts, who were juveniles at the time of offence, have been lodged in Agra Central jail for periods ranging from around 14 to 22 years in a murder case.
  • The prison authorities took nearly four days to release them despite SC granting them bail on July 8.

ii.Again, Pinjra Tod activists Devangana Kalita and Natasha Narwal and Jamia Millia Islamia student Asif Iqbal Tanha walked out of the Tihar Jail nearly two days after the Delhi High Court granted them bail.
