Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully conducted the 3rd Long duration Hot test of the Liquid propellant Vikas Engine for the core L110 liquid stage of human rated GSLV MkIII vehicle, as part of the engine qualification requirement for the Gaganyaan Programme (IndiaтАЩs 1st Human Space flight programme).
- The engine was tested for 240 seconds at the engine test facility of ISRO Propulsion Complex (IPRC), Mahendragiri, Tamil Nadu.
- ISROтАЩs тАШGaganyaanтАЩ mission is scheduled for launch in 2022-23.
Gaganyaan Programme
The formal announcement of the programme was made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day address on August 15, 2018.
i.The INR 10, 000 Crore Gaganyaan Mission aims to send a 3-member crew to space for a period of 5-7 days by 2022-23 when India completes 75 years of Independence.┬а GSLV MkIII is set to be used for the mission.
- As a prelude to тАШGaganyaanтАЩ, ISRO has planned to launch the first unmanned mission in December 2021 followed by the Second unmanned mission in 2022-23.
- As part of the programme, 4 Indian astronaut-candidates have undergone generic space flight training in Russia.
ii.IndiaтАЩs Gaganyaan Mission will make it just the 4th Nation to send a crew into space after Russia (1st), the USA & China.
iii.Human Space Flight Centre (HSFC) is responsible for the implementation of the тАШGaganyaan MissionтАЩ.┬а It functions under ISRO.
