The National Fish Farmers Day is annually observed across India on 10th July in memory of the Scientists – Dr K. H. Alikunhi and Dr Hiralal Chaudhuri – who successfully demonstrated the induced breeding in Indian Major Carps on 10th July 1957.
The day also recognises the contribution and the efforts of fish farmers in producing the fish to meet the needs of the people.
- India celebrated the 21st National Fish Farmers Day on 10th July 2021.
The National Fisheries Development Board(NFDB), under the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying virtually celebrated the 21st National Fish Farmers’ Day.
- The day is also observed as the National Fisheries Development Board(NFDB) Foundation Day.
- 2021 marks the 15th NFDB foundation day.
Background:
i.In 2001, the Government of India declared that the 10th July of every year will be observed as the National Fish Farmers’ Day” starting from 2001.
ii.The first Fish Farmers’ Day on 10th July 2001 was celebrated by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) -Central Institute of Fisheries Education(CIFE), Mumbai, the leading institute of Fisheries Education institution in India.
Blue Revolution:
i.The Blue Revolution in India began with the development of seed production technology through Hypophysation, the technology of induced breeding, by Dr H L Chaudhuri under the guidance of Dr. K.H. Alikunhi Head of erstwhile ‘Pond Culture Division’ of Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI) at Cuttack, Odisha (now Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, CIFA, Bhubaneswar).
ii.The first success in induced breeding was achieved at Angul in Odisha on 10th July 1957.

i.Parshottam Rupala, Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, L. Murugan, Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, along with officials of the Department of Fisheries and NFDB participated in the event.
ii.Fish farmers, aqua-preneurs & fisher folks, professionals, officials and scientists from across India participated in the event.
Highlights:
i.Union Minister Parshottam Rupala launched the Jingles on Domestic Fish Consumption and announced the winners of the tagline and slogan contest on Domestic Fish Consumption.
ii.The ministers have also interacted with the beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and NFDB schemes from across India.
About Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY):
i.The Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) is a flagship scheme launched in September 2020 for focused and sustainable development of the fisheries sector in India with an estimated investment of Rs. 20,050 crores for its implementation.
ii.PMMSY will be implemented in all the States and Union Territories for 5 years from FY 2020-21 to FY 2024-25.
