Ramgarh Vishdhari Sanctuary in Bundi, Rajasthan has been sanctioned as the┬а4th Tiger Reserve of Rajasthan and 52nd Tiger Reserve of India by the┬аMinistry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEFCC).
- In June 2021, The Technical Committee of┬аNational Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) approved the proposal for Ramgarh Vishdhari Sanctuary into Tiger Reserve.
- The proposed sanctuary falls between 2 Tiger Reserves – Ranthambore Tiger Reserve in the Northeast and Mukundra Tiger Reserve in the South.
- The other 3 Tiger Reserves in Rajasthan namely Ranthambore in Sawai Madhopur, Sariska in Alwar, and Mukundra Tiger reserve in Kota are home to 102 Tigers.
Key Points
i.The Ramgarh Vishdhari Sanctuary will be spread across 1,071 sq kms. A 302 Sq Km area in the proposed tiger sanctuary will be left as critical habitat for Tigers and the rest of the area will act as a buffer zone for the┬аRanthambore National Park.
ii.Ramgarh Vishdhari Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1982. The core areas of the sanctuary have 8 villages and are home to large numbers of wild animals like sambhars, caracals, wild boars, nilgai, and striped Hyena.
National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA)
i.It is a statutory body under MoEFCC and was launched in 2005. It was constituted under enabling provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 and amended in 2006.
ii.One of its main objectives is to provide statutory authority to тАШProject TigerтАЩ so that compliance of its directives becomes legal.
- Project Tiger was launched in┬а1973 with 9 tiger reserves for conserving IndiaтАЩs national animal, the tiger. It is an ongoing centrally sponsored scheme of MoEFCC.
