The United Nations(UN)’s English Language Day and Spanish Language Day are annually observed across the Globe on 23rd April to promote the use of both English and Spanish respectively as the official language of the organisation.
Why April 23?
i.UN Spanish language day– 23rd April marks the death anniversary of Miguel de Cervantes, the genius of Spanish literature.
ii.UN English language day – 23rd April marks both the birth and death anniversary of the famous English playwright William Shakespeare, who was known as “Bard of Avon”.
UN English Language Day 2021:
It is annually observed on the 23rd April to promote the history, culture and the achievements associated with English. The day also aims to promote books, poetry and literature in the English Language.

UN Spanish Language Day 2021:
The UN Spanish Language Day is annually observed on 23rd April to create awareness about the language among the UN’s staff and to promote the history, culture and the use of Spanish as the official language of the organisation.

- Spanish is the 2nd language in the world with more native speakers and Mexico is the largest Spanish speaking country.
- It is the 3rd most popular language on the Internet, after English and Chinese.
