India with a score of 53 has been ranked 87th (out of 115 countries) in the Global Energy Transition Index (ETI) 2021 released by World Economic Forum (WEF) in its report ‘Fostering Effective Energy Transition 2021’ edition. The index was topped by Sweden, Norway & Denmark.
- ETI benchmarks countries on the performance of their energy system, as well as their readiness for transition to a secure, sustainable, affordable, and reliable energy future.
- The report has been prepared by WEF in partnership with Accenture.
- The 2021 edition of the report marks the 10th anniversary of the ETI.
- In the Asian Region, Malaysia came at the top in the Index (out of 13), while India finished at 9th position.

- It also takes note of the recent changes in the global energy landscape & the increasing urgency of climate change action.
Global Scenario
- China (68) & India (87) which collectively account for a third of global energy demand, have made strong improvements in the energy sector in the past decade.
- India has targeted improvements through subsidy reforms, rapid scaling energy access, strong political commitment and a regulatory environment for the energy transition.
- 92 out of 115 countries have increased their energy transition score over the past 10 years.

- Other Countries in the top 10 ranking – Switzerland (4), Austria (5), Finland (6), UK (7), New Zealand (8), France (9) & Iceland (10).
- Among G20 Countries, the UK topped the rankings, while India finished at 19th rank.
- In the Asian Region, Malaysia came at the top in the Index (out of 13), while India finished at 9th position.
