ISRO launches Sounding Rocket RH-560 to Study Altitude Variations in Neutral Winds, Plasma Dynamics

ISRO launches sounding rocket RH-560On 12th March 2021, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launched a new Sounding rocket from its Rohini Series, RH-560 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), Sriharikota Range (SHAR), Andhra Pradesh. This Sounding rocket will help in carrying out studies in the upper Atmospheric regions, on Altitude Variations in the Neutral Winds and Plasma Dynamics. 

  • RH-560 is a 2-stage rocket that can reach a maximum launch altitude of 548 Kms.
  • They also serve as easily affordable platforms to test or prove prototypes of new components or subsystems intended for use in launch vehicles and satellites.

Note- Here in RH-560, RH stands for ‘Rohini’ and the number 560 represents the diameter of the Rocket in mm.

About Rohini Series:

i.In 1975, All Sounding Rockets of ISRO were consolidated under the Rohini Sounding Rocket (RSR) Programme.

ii.At present, 3 Rohini series sounding rockets – RH-200, RH-300 MK-II and RH-560 MK-II are under operation.

  • These rockets are capable of carrying 8-100kg payload and reach an altitude of 80 to 475km.

iii.1st Sounding Rocket was launched by ISRO in 1963 from Thumba near Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

iv.ISRO started launching, indigenously made Sounding Rockets from 1965.
