National Safety Day is annually observed across India on 4th March to create awareness about the safety and hygienic measures which should be inculcated in the lifestyle of the general people. The National Safety Week is observed from 4th March 2021 to 10th March 2021.
The day marks the establishment of the National Safety council of India.
The 4th March 2021 marks the 50th National Safety Day.
National Safety Day 2021 is observed under the theme “Learn from Disaster and Prepare for a Safer Future”.
Objective:
To create awareness about the importance of all guidelines like safety, workplace safety, the safety of human health and environment.
To take the Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) movement to different parts of the country.
To promote use of participative approach by employers by involving their employees in SHE activities.
To promote development of need-based activities, self-compliance with statutory requirements and professional SHE management systems at work places.
To remind employers, employees and others concerned of their responsibility in making the workplace safer.
Background:
i.During its 22nd session, the Union Ministry of Labour and employment recommended setting up a National Safety Council to promote accident prevention.
ii.The 24th Session of the Standing Labour Committee accepted the proposal concerning the constitution of the National Safety Council (NSC) in February, 1966.
iii.The Ministry of Labour, Government of India established the National Safety Council on 4th March, 1966.
iv.National Safety Day was first observed on 4th March 1972, the foundation day of the National Safety Council.
Significance of National Safety Day:
The National Safety Day is a national campaign celebrated by various departments, industries, Non-Governmental organisations(NGO) and regulatory agencies of India.
National Safety Week:
The National Safety Day which was started as a one-day campaign on 4th March is observed as the National Safety Week from 4th March 2021 to 10th March 2021.
Key Points:
According to the data of the National Crime Records Bureau(NCRB) states that around 421104 accidental deaths occurred in 2019 out of which around 467171 were traffic accidents.
About National Safety Council (NSC):
NSC was registered as a Society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 and it is registered as a Public Trust under the Bombay Public Trust Act 1950.
