On March 4, 2021, the unveiling of QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) World University Rankings by Subject 2021 was held virtually which was addressed by Union Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, Ministry of Education (MoE).
- Notably, the number of Indian Institutions in the list of top 100 has increased to 12 from 8. These are IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, IISC Bangalore, IIT Guwahati, IIM Bangalore, IIM Ahmedabad, JNU, Anna University, University of Delhi, and O.P Jindal University.
Why is it prepared?
This annual ranking covered a total of 51 disciplines, grouped into five broad subject areas to help prospective students identify the leading universities in a particular subject.

Key Points:
i.The O P Jindal Global University is the only private university to have entered the top-100 club.
ii.There are 25 programmes offered by higher education institutions in India rank among the top 100 in the world in their respective subject categories. Out of them 17 are in engineering.
iii.For Pharmacy and Pharmacology Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) has secured a place in the 151-200 band. It also ranked for Mathematics in the 451-500 band, and Business and Management Studies in the 451-500 band.
iv.For Life Science and Medical subject, AIIMS (All India Institute Of Medical Sciences) has bagged 248th rank while Delhi University and PGIMR Chandigarh have secured their places in 401-450 and 451-500 spots.
v.For the Social Science and Management subject, Delhi University has bagged 208th rank followed by IIT- Bombay at 232nd rank and IIT- Delhi at 241st rank.
vi.The Vellore Institute of Technology also ranked the top 300 for Electrical and Electronic Engineering (251-300 band).
Parameters of Ranking:
The QS World Universities Ranking report is premised upon six parameters. These are Academic Reputation (40%), Employer Reputation (10%), Faculty/Student Ratio (20%), Citations per faculty (20%), and International Faculty Ratio & International Student Ratio (5%).

The Central Government is putting efforts to address the gender gap in higher education, as a result, now women constitute 48.6% of the total enrolment.
