On February 16, 2021, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been inked between GE Power Conversion and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) to act as partners on propulsion system design.
- This MoU is on the lines of “Atmanirbhar Bharat” making India self-reliant as it will bring global technology, expertise, and design capabilities together.
- Both entities have relevant expertise and experience to design integrated, electrical and hybrid propulsion systems with specific focus on green energy technologies.
Need of Propulsion System Design:
With the growing demand for alternative propulsion systems, which not only improve overall efficiency but also reduce greenhouse gas emissions, there is a pressing need to find effective implementable solutions quickly.
- Electric and hybrid propulsion is a fast-growing and promising solution to this problem.
- These technologies have significant naval applications due to the growing power demand of future warships.

i.On December 31, 2020, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE), Kolkata, West Bengal delivered the Landing Craft Utility (LCU) MK IV class vessel ‘IN LCU L-58’ (Yard 2099) to the Indian Navy (IN). The ship will serve in the Andaman & Nicobar Command (ANC), which is India’s 1st & only tri-service command.
ii.The 5th and last ship in the series of Fast Patrol Vessels (FPV) namely “ICGS Kanaklata Barua” or “Yard 2117” for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has been delivered by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd.
