On February 12, 2021, Indian Navy signed a contract for construction of 5 Diving Support Crafts (DSCs) with Titagarh Wagons Ltd, Kolkata (West Bengal) under the ‘Make in India’ initiative of Government of India.
- The value of order is about Rs.174.76 crore only. As per the contract, the DSC has to be supplied within 30 months approximately.
- Upon commissioning, the DSC will meet the needs of Command Clearance Diving Teams (CCDTs) which provide assistance to ships which are inside or come close to harbour for underwater repair, maintenance and salvage.
- DSCs are equipped with modern equipment and tools for performing diving operations.
- It will serve as a perfect platform conducting training of Indian Navy’s diving cadre.
i.Diving Support Vessels are ships which are used as a floating base for professional diving projects.
- Their main functions will be Conduct of Operational/training dives in harbours and coastal waters & for conveyance of divers and equipment to diving areas.
