Overview of Yonex Thailand Open 2021 Super 1000 – Badminton Tournament

The Yonex Thailand Open 2021 (Level – Super 1000), a Badminton Tournament took place at Impact arena, Bangkok, Thailand from January 12-17, 2021.

• It is the First Badminton Tournament of 2021.
• It was organized by the Badminton Association of Thailand & sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

Winners of Singles Title 

• Men’s Category – Viktor Axelsen (Denmark) defeated Angus Long (Hong Kong) to clinch the Men’s Singles Title.
• Women’s Category – Carolina Marin (Spain) defeated Tai Tzu-ying (Taiwan) to bag the Women’s Singles Title.

Winners of Doubles Title:

• In the Men’s Doubles, Taiwan’s Lee Yang & Wang Chi-Lin beat Malaysia’s Goh V Shem & Tan Wee Kiong to bag the Doubles Title.
• In the Women’s Doubles, Indonesia’s Greysia Polii & Apriyani Rahayu defeated Thailand’s Jongkolphan Kititharakul & Rawinda Prajongjai to clinch the Doubles Title.

Winners of Mixed Doubles:

Thailand’s Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai defeated Indonesia’s Praveen Jordan & Melati Daeva Oktavianti to clinch the Mixed Doubles Title.

Indian Players:

i.India’s Saina Nehwal lost in the women’s singles second round to Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan.

• In men’s singles, Kidambi Srikanth was forced to give a walkover to his Opponent Lee Zii Jia (Malaysia) in the Second Round as he had pulled up his right calf muscle.
• In Men’s Doubles, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy & Chirag Shetty were defeated by Indonesia’s Mohammad Ahsan & Hendra Setiawan in the Second Round.
• 2 other Indian Men’s Doubles Players – Arjun M R, D Kapila & M Attri, B. S Reddy bowed out in the First Round.

Six Indians feature in top-10 of BWF World Junior Rankings:

In the Latest World Junior Rankings released by BWF post COVID, 6 Indians have featured in the Top-10 Spots

i.In the Men’s Category, Varun Kapur (Maharashtra) attained his Career-best ranking of World Number 2.

•     He is the only Indian in Top 10 among male shuttlers.

ii.In the Women’s Category, Samiya Imad Farooqi (Telangana) attained her Career-best ranking of World Number 2.

• Tasnim Mir (4), Treesa Jolly (8) & Aditi Bhatt (10) are the other Indian shuttlers in the Top 10 of Female Singles Category.
• In the Women’s Doubles Category, Tressa (8), Tanisha Crasto (9) & Aditi (9) are placed inside top-10.
