India launches first remote monitoring system for oil refineries

On December 29, 2020, Indian  Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) launched India’s 1st Remote Monitoring & Operation Centre for Tracking of Refinery Gas Turbines across all its refineries in Hyderabad, Telangana. The project has been implemented by BHEL-GE Gas Turbine Services (BGGTS), a joint venture of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited-General Electric (BHEL-GE). It was inaugurated by Union Minister for Petroleum & Natural Gas, Dharmendra Pradhan.

The technology behind the Monitoring system is called ‘Proactive Predictive Analytics based Automated Anomaly Detection’, it was developed by GE, BHEL & IndianOil.

Objective:

i.To aid in early detection & diagnosis of issues related to Gas Turbines, before they become critical & trigger corrective actions.

ii.To enhance operational reliability, productivity, and environmental sustainability of refineries.

People Present:

S.M. Vaidya, Chairman of IOCL;Dr Nalin Shinghal, Chief Managing Director (CMD) of BHEL;Kamalesh Das, Chairman of BGGTS & Director (R&D), BHEL;Deepesh Nanda, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), South Asia, GE Gas Power were present during the inauguration.

Key Points:

i.The monitoring system will generate alerts & advisories using predictive analysis.

ii.Operational Data coming from 27 Gas Turbines of 8 Indian Oil refineries across India would be analysed 24*7 at the Remote Monitoring Center at Hyderabad.

iii.The monitoring system was originally proposed to operate from GE’s Atlanta Analytical Centre in America, however due to India’s Data Residency Clause & National Cyber Security Guidelines it was decided to operate from Hyderabad.

IOCL’s 8 refineries – Digboi (Assam), Bongaigaon  (Assam), Paradip (Odisha), Panipat (Haryana), Gujarat (Vadodara), Mathura (Uttar Pradesh), Barauni (Bihar) & Haldia (West Bengal).
