Leaders of the Apatani and Nyishi tribes of Arunachal Pradesh signed an accord in presence of Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Nabam Tuki in capital city Itanagar. This agreement will lead to new era of peaceful co-existence and social harmony.
- The accord with eight resolutions was signed by Bengia Tulom – President of Nyishi Elite Society (NES) and Dr Hage Loder – President of Tani Supum Dukum (TSD) at Ziro town.
MAJOR HIGHLIGHTS OF ACCORD
- Both the communities resolved to maintain the age-old social relations prevailing since time immemorial.
- Both the communities shall activate more social and communal harmony.
- The district headquarter shall be expanded to accommodate and ensuring equal participation in the facilities and developmental process by the Nyishis and the Apatanis.
- The traditional system of revenge in both the tribes shall be strictly denounced and prohibited so as to avoid victimisation of the innocents.
- Both the communities shall encourage their members to participate in the traditional festivals, like Nyokum Yullo, Dree, Boori-Boot Yullo, Longte, Myoko so that the younger generations shall have opportunities to intermingle so as to learn and respect each other’s culture.
- Government would also encourage inter-tribe marriages by rewarding such couples with Rs 50,000.
- No differences or disputes will ever take a communal colour, caste, creed and community
BACKGROUND
Ziro Valley in Lower Subansiri district has traditionally been home to the Apatanis with the Nyishis being their immediate neighbours. The tribes have shared a tumultuous history, marked by incidents of violence.
The differences between the Nyishis and the Bodos along the interstate boundary had been resolved peacefully after the agreements were signed.
