On 14th October 2020, the Hindustan Zinc Limited(HZL), a subsidiary of Vedanta Limited, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government of Gujarat to set up World’s Biggest Zinc smelter complex in Doswada GIDC (Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation), Tapi, Gujarat. This 300 KTPA (Kilo Tonnes Per Annum) greenfield facility of HZL is the first of its kind in Gujarat with zero liquid discharge. This is one of the largest MoU signed under Gujarat’s modified industrial policy, that provides benefits to companies that invest in backward tribal districts.

Features of the Zinc Smelter:
i.The zinc smelter facility of 415 acres with a state of the art Research & Development (R&D) Centre will require an investment of Rs.5000 to 10000 crore in Phases.
ii.The first phase of the facility will become operational in 36 months (by 2022) and will create around 5000 direct and indirect employment opportunities for the locals and increase the economy of Gujarat.
iii.The location of the facility in Tapi provides close proximity to the Hazira port (110kilometer (km)) and the upcoming Megdala port(90km).
Highlights:
i.This zero liquid discharge facility will be one of the low cost smelters in the world.
ii.This smelter facility will produce zinc and other minor materials.
iii.This facility incorporates the latest technologies, automations and high standards of environment and health safety compliance.
