Maritime Union of India (MUI) has collaborated with the United Nations to assist seafarers who are stranded on ships due to COVID-19 Pandemic. Through the Seafarers Crisis Action Team (SCAT), MUI will provide round-the-clock advice, counselling and assistance to Indian seafarers and their family members.Â
i.MUI will also work with the Ministry of Shipping of India and Indian Embassies across the globe to provide assistance to Indian seafarers during the pandemic.Â
ii.Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic over four lakh global seafarers, including thousands of Indians are struck on ships.
Seafarers Crisis Action Team (SCAT):
Due to the pandemic, many seafarers cannot leave their ships, repatriate to home and cannot get urgent medical assistance.Â
i.The Seafarers Crisis Action Team (SCAT) was established by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) to help resolve individual cases of seafarers.Â
ii.It will work along with International Labour Organization (ILO), the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) and International Chamber of Shipping (ICS).
iii.The SCAT will repatriate seafarers to their homes, protect the mental health of seafarers, reach out to the relatives of seafarers and provide access to urgent medical care for seafarers. Â

i.The International Day of the Seafarer was observed on June 25, 2020 as a tribute to the Seafarers and sailors who are essential to global trade and transport. The day aims to raise awareness about the dangers of sea travel, like piracy. This year marks the 10th edition.
