On September 22, 2020 Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully test fired the Indigenously developed Laser Guided Anti-Tank Guided Missile (ATGM) from Main Battle Tank (MBT) Arjun at the Armoured Corps Centre and School (ACC&S), KK Ranges in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra.
Usage:
The missile will be designed to destroy modern as well as future enemy battle tanks.
Development Agencies:
Pune based DRDO facilities Armament Research & Development Establishment (ARDE) and High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL) developed the missile in collaboration with DRDO Laboratory Instruments Research & Development Establishment (IRDE) in Dehradun.
Key Points:
i.The missile can actively engage a moving target including low-flying helicopters.
ii.The missile had hit a target of upto 3Km in these tests.
iii.It employs a High-Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) warhead to defeat Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA) (Specially designed Protective Armours used in military vehicles) which protects the armoured vehicles.
iv.Currently being launched from Arjun Tank Gun, it has been designed so that it can be fired from other platforms too.
v.The ATGM will significantly increase the fire-power capability of Indian Army along the frontiers with Pakistan and China.
