In a major boost for Make in India, the first ever Pinaka rockets fully manufactured by the private sector company “Economic Explosives Ltd (EEL)” have been successfully test fired by the army at a firing range in Pokhran, Rajasthan. Six Pinaka rockets were test fired as part of the final developmental trials and are the first munition of its kind made by the private sector in India.
- These rockets have been manufactured on the lines of the transfer of technology (ToT) agreement between Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and private sector, five years ago.
- With the entry of private sector, the single source dependency on Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) will be reduced.
Key Points:
-The technology for Pinaka rockets has been developed by Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) and High Energy Material Research Laboratory (HEMRL), both units of DRDO.
The army has a large requirement for rockets of this class, which is pegged at over 1,000 units annually. With the successful evaluation, EEL can now qualify to bid if the Army floats a request for proposal (RFP) to make Pinaka rockets.
