On June 29, 2020 Odisha government in a high-level meeting held under the Chairmanship of Chief Secretary Asit Tripathy decided to implement a new initiative ‘Sabuja Odisha’. The initiative will increase green cover through extensive plantations over 1,30,264 Hectares of land.
- About 1.30 lakh hectares of land where these seedlings can be planted has been identified in 2,660 locations for plantation.
Key Info
i.A web-based system will be set up for real-time monitoring and supervision of the programme.
ii.District level Committee will be formed under the chairmanship of Collector for successful coordination and implementation of the programme.
iii.Divisional Forest Officer’s Headquarters will act as Plantation Officer in the district. All districts are directed to have their own micro-level work plan for plantations.
iv.The seedling will be distributed to the people of their choice at Rs 1 per seedling. The plantation sites with geographic information system integrations will be uploaded on the website for continuous monitoring through satellite applications.
v.The identified 1,30,264 hectares of land for plantation is nearly two times more than the last year’s plantation within 68,358 hectares.
Number of seedlings raised
i.Till now, around 13.11 crore seedlings of various varieties like the medicinal plant, fruit-bearing species, timber species, multi-purpose plants, aesthetic and shade bearing species, endangered species have been raised.
ii.The all time high number of seedlings in 2020 have been raised in the 5,222 nurseries.
