On 7th June 2020, The Second World Food Safety Day was celebrated to promote actions that support food security, human health, agriculture and sustainable development and prevent, detect and manage foodborne diseases. The First World Food Safety Day was celebrated on 7th June 2019.
The Theme of World Food Safety Day 2020 remains the same as the theme of 2019 “Food Safety, everyone’s business”.
Note:
Due to Covid-19 situations all the physical events are cancelled and replaced by virtual events.
Aim:
To recognise food safety in public agenda and to reduce the pressure of foodborne diseases.
Background:
i.The Codex Alimentarius Commission agreed to promote the proposal to establish World Food Safety Day on permanent basis in the 39th session in 2016.
ii.The Food and Agriculture Organization(FAO) Conference and the World Health Organization(WHO) adopted the resolution to support the World Food Safety Day in 2017.
iii.In December 2018, The United Nations General Assembly decided to designate the 7th June as World Safety Day.
Food Safety:
i.Food Safety is of all the hazards like microbiological, chemical or physical which are not visible to the naked eye like the bacteria, viruses or the pesticides.
ii.It plays a major role in assuring that the food is safe at all the stages of the food chain (production to harvest, processing, storage, distribution, preparation and consumption).
Food Safety Everyone’s Business:
i.The Safety of Food is a shared responsibility among the government, producers and consumers.
ii.The methods and processes involved in the food chain should comply with the Global food standards which includes preparedness for emergency situations, providing clean water, good agricultural practices and applications of food safety managements.
