World Pest Day or World Pest Awareness Day is celebrated every year on June 6 to raise awareness of how pest management helps preserve the quality of life. The day is initiated by the Chinese Pest Control Association, and co-sponsored by the Federation of Asian and Oceania Pest Managers’ Association(FAOPMA), the National Pest Management Association(NPMA), and the Confederation of European Pest Management Associations(CEPA).
Purpose of the day:
i.Increase the public, government, and media awareness of the vital role played by pest management organization to protect public health & initiate conversation and start new ways of thinking to achieve positive changes in public health
ii.Highlight the professional image of the pest management industry & promote the use of professional pest management in a scientific and socially responsible way
iii.Pay attention to the larger threats posed by smaller pests.
World Pest Day 2020
The Global Pest Management Coalition has put a video with associations from around the world, addressing the value of the pest management industry as an essential service, protecting public health, food, homes & businesses.
Background
The inaugural ceremony of the day was held at the Beijing Hotel on June 6th, 2017
Note– An estimate of 900-million insect types can be pests & fall into four different categories based on body types namely; beetles, flies, moths and butterflies & ants, bees and wasps.
