On 20th May 2020, The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) announced that the Government of India launched a scheme for 100% solarisation of Konark Sun Temple and Konark town in Odisha.
Key Points:
i.The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has taken up this scheme of complete solarisation of Konark town in Odisha.
ii.The objective of this scheme is to advance the Prime Minister’s vision to develop the historical Sun Temple town of Konark as ‘Surya Nagri’ and to meet all the energy requirements of the Konark town with solar energy.
iii.The scheme foresees a 10 megawatt (MW) grid-connected solar project and various solar off-grid applications like solar trees, solar drinking water kiosks and off-grid power plants with battery storage, with 100% central financial assistance (CFA) support around Rs 25 crore through MNRE from Government of India.
iv.Odisha Renewable Energy Development Agency (OREDA) will be implementing this scheme.
