On November 16, 2019, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India (GoI) has set up a 23 -member Development Council headed by Guruprasad Mohapatra (Secretary DPIIT) for Bicycle.
The Council , active for 2 years, will be responsible for planning in design, engineering and manufacturing of lighter, smarter, value added, safe and faster premium bicycles which are comparable with global standards for exports and domestic market.Key Points:
i.About the council: The Joint Secretary, Light Engineering Industry Division in DPIIT, will be the Member Secretary. The Council has 9 ex-officio members from DPIIT and Department of Commerce, Ministries of Housing and Urban Affairs, Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Health and Family Welfare, Road Transport and Highways, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and Bureau of Indian Standards(BIS). 7 expert domain members and 4 nominated members will also be a part of the council.
ii.Terms of Reference (ToR):The prime role of the council are as follows,
- It will work to improve competitiveness and level of services and transform Indian bicycle technology.
- With the support of schemes and favorable trade policies, it should promote the export competitiveness of bicycles.
- The Council should ensure the development of the ecosystem.
- It should work for the development of skilled human resources development for bicycle manufacturing and repair shops & should identify and study the best international practices and success stories to adopt for bicycle manufacturing, recycling, and infrastructure development in India.
