Govt to develop 15,000 km of NH at Rs 1.9 lakh cr

PON RADHAKRISHNAN, Minister of Road Transport and Highways said that the Government inorder to improve connectivity with far- flung areas including major tourism centers, plans to develop 15,000 km of National Highways (NH) at an estimated cost of Rs 1,90,000 crore on AUGUST 3, 2015.

  • The government has undertaken detailed review of NH network with a view to improve connectivity in border area including coastal boundaries, major cities of tourism, pilgrimage, minor ports and under developed areas.
  • India has the world’s second-largest road network at 4.80 million kms.
  • Government has already rolled out projects worth USD 93 billion, including the USD 45 billion flagship road building programme of NHDP.

NATIONAL HIGHWAY:

  • The National Highways Network of India is a network of highways that is managed and maintained by agencies of theGovernment of India.
  • National highways measured over 96,260 km (59,810 mi) as of 2015, including over 1,000 km (620 mi) of limited-access expressways (motorways).
  • The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is the nodal agency responsible for building, upgrading and maintaining most of the national highways network. It operates under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
  • The National Highways Development Project (NHDP) is a major effort to expand and upgrade the network of highways.
