Chandrayaan-2
ISRO has numerous milestones to its credit since its establishment.Throughout the years, ISRO has upheld its mission of bringing space to the service of the common man, to the service of the Nation. In the process, it has become one of the six largest space agencies in the world with a plethora of space missions, satellite communication systems, advanced security systems both military and commercial just to name a few. In the list of these marvels, comes ISRO’s lunar exploration missions of which the first mission Chandrayaan 1 was launched on 22 october, 2008 and was a huge success. Chandrayaan 2 was launched on July 22 this year and instead of using the outdated PSLV rocket used earlier, the spacecraft made use of the advanced Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III. Through this effort, the aim was to improve our understanding of the Moon — discoveries that will benefit India and humanity as a whole. These insights and experiences aim at a paradigm shift in how lunar expeditions are approached for years to come — propelling further voyages into the farthest frontiers.
For almost entire duration of Chandrayaan 2 mission, the mission went on as planned but due to some technical snag it could not achieve the soft landing of rover named Vikram and lost its communication just 2.1 km above the surface. But the orbiter still will be in function for the next seven years and has spotted the lander which remains tilted on the moon’s surface and scientists are trying to restore the connection with it. The success criteria was defined for each and every phase of the mission and till date 90 to 95% of the mission objectives have been accomplished and will continue contribute to Lunar science , notwithstanding the loss of communication with the Lander.
Now, immediately after the technical assessment and realising the nature of challenges this mission had faced, ISRO needs to plan a similar mission. Now, it needs to check the possibility of whether only a Lander-Rover system could be launched since the orbiter is already available. There could be compatibility issues in regards to India’s system. But obviously they could be overcome by proper planning. The challenge is that the life of the orbiter is one year and hence, ISRO would be required to hurry if they require to launch such a system.
Today, India is one of the very few countries that has significant achievements to its credit in the area of space. To sum up, it would suffice to say that, be it Mission Shakti, Chandrayaan-2 or the most ambitious of the lot, the upcoming Gaganyaan, India’s scientists and ISRO deserve all the accolades that will continue to come their way and it is only a matter of time before we accomplish accomplish a controlled soft landing of the rover on the lunar south pole and show our technological prowess in space exploration.
