The Chief Minister(CM) of Tamil Nadu (TN) KPalaniswami paid a three nation tour of 14 days to the United States(US), United Kingdom (UK) and United Arab Emirates(UAE) from August 28- September 10 2019 to attract investment in the state. The tour has fetched total investment worth Rs 8,830 crore from 41 Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) signed with the three nations and could provide job opportunities to 35520 people of TN. This is the first trip abroad travel by an active Chief Minister.
Cm’s visit to United Kingdom
i. TN Delegation: Chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, lead the delegation along with TN health minister C Vijayabaskar and also other ministers such as Industries minister MC Sampath, Revenue and IT minister RB Udhayakumar, and Dairy Development minister RajenthraBhalaji and Bureaucrats for an interactive session with the British Members of Parliament (MP) in capital city London scheduled on August 28, 2019.
ii. Healthcare:The CM signed agreements related to healthcare in order to boost healthcare services in the state. He visited the Emergency Operations Centre of the London Ambulance Service and is to implement it to fine tune the response in case of emergency in the 108 ambulance service of TN. Other areas of collaboration include maternal and child healthcare, organ transplantations and state-of-the-art neurology treatments.
iii. Tie ups:Â The TN govt. tied up with International Skills Development Corporation (ISDC), a skill development company based in London, UK. The tie up is done to train the workforce of the health sector especially nurses and doctors. This tie up also has a proposal to recruit trained nurses of TN for specialized training courses to serve the National Health Service(NHS) of UK.
iv. SoI: The London school of hygiene and tropical medicine which works on malaria research mainly signed a Statement of Intent(SoI) with TN to expertise in control of vector borne diseases, especially malaria and dengue.
v. Flagship hospital: The King’s College Hospital, London will be established in TN as a flagship hospital facilitated by the TN government. The King’s College, London presented MoU with TN for collaboration.
vi. Visit to Suffolk: The CM visited UK power network company Enzen in Ipswich, Suffolk county for the purpose of solar and wind power collaboration and also assessed smart grid system to make use of the thermal and renewable sources. TN with more than 8000MW wind power and 2500MW of solar power is in need of the smart grid system to minimize power loss.
Visit to USA
i. MoUs: Some of the companies that signed Mou with TN are Scitus Pharma, Novitium Labs, Aspire Consulting and Zillion Technologies and Jean Martin.Besides, Haldia Petrochemicals, one of the largest companies in India, signed an in-principle agreement to establish a naphtha cracker unit in TN with Rs 50,000 crore investment in the first phase.
ii. Investors meet in New York: 16 US companies made MoUs worth Rs 2780 crores in the investors meet that was held in New York. Mr. Palaniswamy launched a website for attracting more investments, where interested investors can offer suggestions based on investment. The website will be managed by Tamil Nadu Industrial Guidance and Exports Promotion Bureau(TNIGEPB). He also launched YaadhumOore (the world is our home) scheme for non-resident Tamils willing to invest in projects in TN.
iii. Investors meet in San Jose: 19 companies signed MoUÂ worthRs. 2,300crores at the investors meet held in San Jose, California. Around 250 investors including firms like Foxconn and Zoho Corporation, who have already invested in TN participated in the meet.
- Digital accelerator: Digital accelerator scheme was launched along with American Tamil Entrepreneurs Association (ATEA) to fund new ventures by state based entrepreneurs. The TN state govt has allocated Rs. 50 crores for this purpose and 10% of total investment as part of assistance.
iv. Visit to San Francisco: In San Francisco, CM visited TESLA Electric Vehicle(EV) unit and laid a proposal to establish a unit in TN. He visited the manufacturing unit and viewed the battery production, EV production to make TN use those technologies and make it an environment friendly state. He also visited Bloomberg Energy firm and interacted with the founder KR Sridhar, a Tamilian, on clean energy production.
v. Visit to Los Angeles:In Los Angeles, Mr. Palaniswamy visited Anaheim city and visited the wastewater treatment plant. He discussed about the techniques used for wastewater treatment and recycling.
vi. Trip to Buffalo:Â On his visit to Buffalo, the second largest city of New York, the CM visited dairy farms to find ways of boosting the dairy sector in TN and also to set up a livestock park in Thalaivasal, Salem.
Visit to Dubai, UAE
The chief minister visited investors of Dubai, UAE on September 9, 2019 and held various business level talks.
i. Business Leaders Forum(BLF): The round table conference, Business Leaders Forum(BLF) was hosted by the UAE’s Ministry of Economy, the Indian Embassy to the UAE, Consulate General of India in Dubai and India Trade and Exhibition Centre. CM was invited as the guest of honour in this forum. Various initiatives to promote e-vehicle manufacturing, electronics, food processing, hardware and software were discussed.
ii. Investments: TN inked pact with 6 firms worthRs. 3750 crores. This pact is expected to create employment opportunities to 10, 800 people of TN.
