Maharashtra cabinet approves SHYAM PRASAD MUKHERJEE JAN VAN VIKAS scheme on JULY 23,2015. Forest Minister SUDHIR MUNGANTIWAR proposed this scheme in the state’s annual budget 2015-16 and this scheme is launched on the project basis from 2015-16 to 2019-2020.
- The aim of this scheme is creation of comprehensive development of villages in the buffer zones of tiger reserves.
- Through this scheme, the main objective is to reduce the man-animal conflit by reducing the dependence of villagers on forest and to boost the supplementary business to farming activities and also creating alternative employment possibilities in these ares.
TIGER RESERVES IN MAHARASHTRA:
- There are 6 tiger reserves in Maharashtra.
- There are 48 tiger reserves in India which are governed by PROJECT TIGER.
- MELGHAT,TADOBA,PENCH,SAHYADRI,NAWEGAON-NAGZIRA and BOR are the 6 tiger reserves in Maharashtra
- In the world, 70 percent of tigers are present in India.
- The number of tigers in India has increased by 30% since 2010 to 2,226 in 2014 according to the tiger census
