The winners of the 96th Academy Awards (Oscars 2024) were announced at the ceremony held at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, United States of America (USA) on 10th March 2024.
- It honours and recognises the movies released in 2023.
Host:
The ceremony was hosted by American Comedian-talk show host Jimmy Kimmel (James Christian Kimmel) for the fourth time, who previously hosted the Oscars in 2017, 2018, and 2023.
Highlights of Oscars 2024:
i.‘Oppenheimer’ wins seven awards at the Oscars 2024; Director – Christopher Nolan, Best actor – Cillian Murphy, Best supporting actor – Robert Downey Jr., Film editing – Jennifer Lame,Cinematography – Hoyte van Hoytema ,Music (Original Score) – Ludwig Göransson, and Best Picture.
ii.“Poor Things” won four awards, including Best Actress, Production Design, Makeup & Hairstyling, and Costume Design.
iii.“The Zone of Interest” won two Oscar awards, including Best Sound and Best International Feature Film.
- It was also the first film from the United Kingdom (UK) to win Best International Feature Film.
iv.Christopher Nolan won his first Oscar for directing “Oppenheimer” out of eight nominations so far. He also won his second Oscar for “Oppenheimer” in the Best Picture category along with Emma Thomas, Charles Roven, and Producers.
v.Cillian Murphy has become the first Irish-born actor to win the Best Actor Award for his performance in ‘Oppenheimer’.
vi.Emma Stone won the Best Actress award for her performance in “Poor Things.”
- It was her second Best Actress Oscar award after her win in 2017 for her role in “La La Land.”
vii.Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas O’Connell won the Best Original Song award for “What Was I Made For?” from the Barbie movie.
- It was the second Oscar for the brother-sister duo after their win in 2021 for “No Time to Die.”
- Billie Eilish became the youngest second-time Oscar winner at the age of 22; she broke the record of Luise Rainer, who won her second Oscar award at the age of 28.
viii.The Swedish composer Ludwig Göransson won his second Oscar award in Music (Original Score) for Oppenheimer. He previously won the Oscar award in 2019 for “Black Panther.”
ix.“20 Days in Mariupol” became the first film from Ukraine to win an Oscar award by winning Best Documentary Feature Film.
- The award was shared by Mstyslav Chernov (director), Michelle Mizner (producer and editor), and Raney Aronson-Rath (producer).

i.Indian Art Director Nitin Chandrakant Desai was remembered at the Oscars’ In Memoriam segment, which honoured those who passed away last year.
ii.He worked as an art director in many Bollywood movies, including Bajirao Mastani, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai, Dostana, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Munna Bhai MBBS, and Panipat.
