The Indian Army (IA)’s Infantry Day is annually observes across India on 27th October to commemorate the contributions of the Infantry in protecting India’s sovereignty and security.
- 27th October 2024 marks the observance of the 78th Infantry Day.
Significance:
i.The day commemorates landing of the 1st Battalion of the Sikh Regiment at Srinagar airfield in 1947 to protect Jammu and Kashmir(J&K) from Pakistani Kabaili Raiders and the Pakistan Army.
ii.This was the first military action by an Indian regiment against external aggression.
Note: The Indian Army also celebrated the Shaurya Diwas to commemorate the successful landing of the Indian Army at Srinagar Airfield on October 27, 1947.
Background:
i.On October 27, 1947, the first battalion of the Sikh Regiment, commanded by Lieutenant (Lt) Colonel (Col) Dewan Ranjit Rai, landed at Srinagar Airport, in response to an urgent request from Maharaja Hari Singh, who sought military assistance to protect Kashmir from Pakistani tribal invaders.
- This timely intervention prevented the occupation of Kashmir, securing the region as part of India and laying the foundation for subsequent military operations in the region.
ii.Lt Col Rai killed in action, on the outskirts of Baramulla (Kashmir). He was honoured with Maha Vir Chakra (MVC) posthumously for his gallant action and exceptional valour.
Events:
During Shaurya Diwas celebrations, a wreath-laying ceremony was held at the National War Memorial in New Delhi, honoring the valiant infantry soldiers who gave their lives for the nation.
- Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan (CoDS) and Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) General Upendra Dwivedi placed wreaths in tribute to these brave hearts, recognizing their ultimate sacrifice for India’s security and freedom.

i.The Infantry, often celebrated as the “Queen of the Battle,” is one of the four main combat arms of the Indian Army (IA), alongside the Armoured Corps, Mechanised Infantry, and Artillery.
ii.It comprises foot soldiers equipped with small arms like assault rifles, grenades, and machine guns, allowing them to engage in close-combat operations.
iii.These soldiers are at the forefront of defending India’s borders, serving vigilantly along the Line of Control (LoC), Line of Actual Control (LAC), and the International Border to safeguard the nation.

ii.This edition, themed “Technology Absorption,” highlights the Infantry’s journey of modernization to meet today’s combat needs. It explores various aspects of defense, including new security challenges, strategic advancements, and lessons from past operations.
