NCC celebrates 75th anniversaryThe National Cadet Corps (NCC), the largest uniformed youth organisation in the world annually celebrates its raising day on the 4th Sunday of November, underscoring the NCC’s commitment to shaping youth with core values such as discipline, leadership, and unwavering patriotism.

  • The 26 November 2023 marks the observance of NCC’s 75th Raising Day. This day is traditionally celebrated as the “NCC day”.

The 74th Raising Day was observed on 27 November 2022 and the 76th Raising Day will be observed on 24 November 2024.

  • This day is celebrated all over India, with cadets participating in blood donation camps and social development programs.

Note: The NCC is the youth wing of the Indian Armed Forces and was raised in 1948.

Background:

i.The Cadet Corps Committee was formed on 29 September 1946 with Pt HN Kunzru as Chairman.

ii.The NCC was formally established on 15 June 1948 by an ordinance issued by the Government of India as an auxiliary educational organization of the Indian Army and Navy.

iii.However, the NCC day is observed throughout India, on the 4th Sunday of November, because, it was on that day in 1948 that the 1st units were raised in Delhi.

National Cadet Corps (NCC):

i.NCC can be termed as a Tri-Services Organization as it comprises of the Army, Navy and Air Force.

ii.The main aim of NCC is to groom the youth of the country into disciplined, responsible, and patriotic citizens.

iii.NCC in India is a voluntary organization that recruits cadets from high schools, colleges, and Universities all over India and gives those volunteers military training.

NCC Flag:

i.The NCC flag for various units of the NCC was first introduced in 1951. In 1954 the existing tricolour flag was introduced.

ii.The 3 colours in the flag depict the 3 services of the Corps, red for the Army, deep blue for the Navy, and light blue for the Air Force.

iii.The letters NCC and the NCC crest in gold in the middle of the flag encircled by a wreath of lotus, give the flag a colourful look and a distinct identity.

2023 Events:

i.Giridhar Aramane, Secretary of the Ministry of Defence paid tribute to fallen heroes at the National War Memorial, New Delhi, Delhi on November 25, 2023.

ii.As an integral part of the event, the All Girls Cadets Band (26 girls) from the NCC Wing of Kamla Nehru College, New Delhi, Delhi played patriotic themes.

iii.NCC cadets led a two-week ‘Swachhata Hi Sewa,’ a pan-India drive for cleanliness and awareness organised various impactful events to foster a garbage-free India.

Note: On October 1, 2023, over 15 Lakhs NCC cadets participated in one-hour ‘Sharmdan’ activities, contributing their efforts to the cause.
