75th foundation day of BIS - January 6 2022The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standard Body of India, annually celebrates the BIS Foundation Day on 6th January. The BIS foundation day commemorates the day on which BIS came into existence as the Indian Standards Institution (ISI) (6th January 1947).

  • 6th January 2022 marks the observance of the 75th BIS Foundation Day.

Background:

i.The Indian Standards Institution (ISI) was established on 6th January 1947 and in June 1947 Dr Lal C. Verman took over as its first Director of ISI.

ii.On 1st April 1987, BIS came into existence through the BIS Act 1986 with a broadened scope and more powers; taking over the staff, assets, liabilities and functions of erstwhile ISI.

iii.The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Act 2016 notified on 22nd March 2016, which came into force on 12th October 2017, established BIS as the National Standards Body of India.

One Nation, One Standard’ scheme:

One Nation, One Standard’ scheme was launched in 2019 with an aim to ensure there is a synergy and no overlap in the standardisation work in the country.

The implementing agency of the One Nation, One Standard’ scheme is BIS.

  • Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO), Lucknow, which sets standards for the railway sector, has become the first standards body to join the One Nation, One Standard’ scheme.
  • BIS has recognised RDSO as a ‘Standard Developing Organisation’ for a period of 3 years.

BIS Launched Mobile App “BIS Care”:

In December 2021, BIS launched a mobile app “BIS Care” for consumers. BIS Care is a tool that enables the consumers to verify the authenticity of an ISI mark, Hallmark and CRS Registration marks on any item or a product.

  • Using the application, the consumers can get the details like the validity of licence or registration, varieties covered in the scope of licence or registration etc., by entering the licence number/Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number/Registration number appearing on the product or item.
