Power System Operation Corporation Limited (POSOCO) Day is annually observed on 3rd January to commemorate the day (3rd January 2017) on which POSOCO stated its independent functioning under the Ministry of Power as one of the Power Public sector undertakings (PSUs).

  • POSOCO was a wholly-owned subsidiary of Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) till 2 January 2017.

3rd January 2022 marks the commemoration of the 5th POSOCO Day. 

Background:

i.In 2017, Pursuant to the transfer of the entire share capital of PGCIL in favour of the President of India, through Secretary, Ministry of Power and its nominees, POSOCO got separated from its parent company PGCIL with effect from 2nd January 2017. 

ii.POSOCO started operating the National Load Despatch Centre(NLDC) and Regional Load Despatch Centres(RLDCs) in India with effect from 3rd January 2017. 

POSOCO: 

i.POSOCO is responsible to ensure the integrated operation of the Grid in a reliable, efficient, and secure manner.

ii.At Present POSOCO consist of 5 RLDCs and the NLDC.

iii.POSOCO has developed several mobile applications like Vidyut Pravah, Merit which are being used for the dissemination of real-time information about the Indian Power System in the public domain to ensure transparency in electricity market operations,

Note:

POSOCO makes a major contribution in the formation of the South Asian Grid for effective utilization of resources between neighbouring countries like Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar under its jurisdiction.

Events:

On the occasion of the 5th POSOCO day, Raj Kumar Singh (RK Singh), Union Minister of Power, dedicated Automatic Generation Control (AGC) to the nation.  AGC project is a significant milestone in enhancing the resilience of the Indian Power System.

  • The Union Minister also released a report titled ‘Assessment of Inertia in Indian Power System’, prepared by POSOCO in collaboration with the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) Bombay.

About AGC:

i.The AGC is being operated by POSOCO through the NLDC.

ii.The AGC will enable the government to achieve the target of 500 GW non-fossil fuel-based generation capacity by 2030.

iii.Through the AGC, NLDC sends signals to more than 50 power plants every 4 seconds to maintain the frequency and reliability of the Indian Power System. This will ensure an efficient and automatic frequency control for handling variable and intermittent renewable generation.

Note: Under the AGC project, to date, 51 GW of generation capacity across all 5 regions is operational.

About the Report:

Considering the target of integrating the Renewable Energy(RE) capability in India, POSOCO instituted a study in collaboration with the IIT Bombay, to review the global best practices for estimation, measurement & monitoring of Power System Inertia and develop a similar methodology for the Indian Power System.
