5th edition of Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) 2022The 5th edition of Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG 2022) hosted by Madhya Pradesh was held from 30th January to 11th February 2023. Maharashtra won the overall championship and topped the medal tally of the Khelo India Youth Games 2022 with 161 medals (56 gold, 55 silver, and 50 bronze).

  • Haryana (40 golds) and Madhya Pradesh (39 golds), were ranked 2nd and 3rd, respectively.

Inauguration of Khelo India Youth Games 2022: 

On 30th January 2023, Khelo India Youth Games 2022 was inaugurated by Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Chief Minister (CM) of Madhya Pradesh, in the presence of Anurag Singh Thakur, Union Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs and Yashodhara Raje Scindia, Madhya Pradesh Sports Minister.

About Khelo India Youth Games 2022: 

Khelo India Youth Games 2022 is the 5th edition of  Khelo India Youth Games, a flagship event under the government of India’s Khelo India initiative.

  • Madhya Pradesh was the 5th Indian State to host the Khelo India Youth Games.

Venues: 

The sporting events were held at 11 venues in 8 different cities in the state of Madhya Pradesh and New Delhi (for Track Cycling).

  • Madhya Pradesh: Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior, Ujjain, Maheshwar, Jabalpur, Mandla and Balaghat
  • Delhi: New Delhi

Mascots: Asha (Female Cheetah) and Mowgli

Torch: Amarkantak

Theme Song: Hindustan ka Dil Dhadka do

Participants:

i. More than 6000 athletes and support staff from 36 states and union territories participated in the KIYG 2022.

ii. The Athletes competed for 937 medals: 295 gold, 295 silver, and 383 bronze, in 27 sports.

KIYG 2022: 11 Athletes set 15 New Youth National Records

i. At KIYG 2023, 11 athletes from various sports set a total of 15 new youth national records.

ii. Weightlifting saw nine new records being set followed by four in athletics and two in swimming.

Key Points: 

i. The State Bank of India(SBI) and Dream Sports Inc. jointly sponsored the KIYG 2022 edition in Madhya Pradesh.

  • The SBI and Dream Sports have extended their sponsorship for KIYG for the 2nd year (2022 & 2023). SBI remained as KIYD’s Principal Sponsor.

ii. The partnership of SBI and Dream Sports with KIYG aims to nurture the value of Sports and fitness among Indian youth.

iii. The partnership will continue to work towards the goal of nurturing and encouraging India’s sports ecosystem.

iv. Khelo India has opened up to corporate sponsorship for the KIYG for the 2nd consecutive year, with the aim to achieve the objective of a win-win and work-work relationship between Khelo India and the Sponsor.

v. For the first time, Sports for All (SFA) has joined KIYG as powered by the sponsor.

Khelo India: 

Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG), formerly Khelo India School Games (KISG), are annually multidisciplinary grassroots games hosted at the national level in India for two categories: under-17-year-old school children & under-21-year-old college students. The events are held in January or February.

i. KISG was inaugurated on 31st January 2018 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

ii. The 1st ever Khelo India games began with the KISG in 2018 held in New Delhi, Delhi.
