The 51st Group of Seven (G7) Summit was held from June 15th to 17th 2025 in Kananaskis, situated in the province of Alberta, Canada. The summit was hosted under Canada’s G7 Presidency, led by Prime Minister(PM) Mark Carney.

  • The summit marked 50 years of partnership and cooperation among G7 member nations since the inaugural G7 meeting in 1975 (Rambouillet, France).
  • This is the seventh G7 summit held in Canada and the second one hosted in Kananaskis, the first being the 28th G8 summit in 2002.
  • Prime Minister (PM) of India, Narendra Modi visited Canada from June 16 to 17, 2025, to participate in the 51st G7 Summit at the invitation of  PM of Canada Mark Carney. This marked PM Modi’s sixth consecutive appearance at the G7 Summit.

Note: The 52nd G7 Summit is set to take place in June 2026 in Évian-les-Bains city located in Haute-Savoie, France.

About Group of Seven (G7):

G7 is an informal forum of seven of the world’s most advanced and industrialized economies, established in 1975. The group includes: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States of America (USA).

  • The European Union (EU) also participates in all G7 meetings as a observer.

Highlights of 51st G7 Summit:

The participating leaders included:Emmanuel Macron, President of France; Friedrich Merz, Chancellor of Germany; Giorgia Meloni, PM of Italy; Shigeru Ishiba, PM of Japan; Keir Starmer, PM of the UK; Donald Trump, President of the USA ; António Costa, President of the European Council; and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission.

  • Canada invited leaders from Australia, Brazil, India, Mexico, South Africa (SA), South Korea, and Ukraine to take part in the Outreach Sessions of the summit.
  • Representatives from major international organizations also joined the summit. These included the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the United Nations (UN), and the World Bank (WB).

PM addresses Outreach Session of the G7 Summit

i.On 17 June, 2025 PM  Modi took part in the Outreach Session of the G7 Summit, where he addressed the session based on the theme ‘Energy Security: Diversification, Technology, and Infrastructure to Ensure Access and Affordability in a Changing World.’

  • In his address, PM Narendra Modi highlighted India’s approach to energy security based on the 4As – Availability, Accessibility, Affordability, and Acceptability.

ii.On the sidelines of the G7 Summit , PM Narendra Modi held bilateral meetings with various world leaders to discuss trade, investment, counter-terrorism, and global challenges.

India-G7 Trade Crosses USD 248 Billion in FY25, Posts USD 28 Billion Trade Surplus:

According to the report by Mumbai (Maharashtra)-based firm Rubix Data Sciences Private Limited, India has seen steady growth in its trade relations with G7 countries except Canada , showing stronger economic ties and cooperation.

Highlights of the Report:

i.Exports from India to the Group of Seven (G7) countries stood at USD 138 billion in Financial Year 2024–25 (FY25), registering a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 13 percent from FY21 to FY25.

ii.On the other hand, imports from G7 nations to India were recorded at USD 110 billion, growing at a 12 percent CAGR during the same period.

iii.This trade dynamic resulted in a trade surplus of USD 28 billion in favour of India, with the surplus itself expanding at a robust 16 percent CAGR since FY21.

iv.India posted bilateral trade surpluses with four G7 countries—the USA, the UK, France, and Italy.

PM Modi gifted unique and traditional Indian artworks to various global leaders:

i.PM of Canada Mark Carney: A handcrafted brass Bodhi tree sculpture from Bihar, symbolizing peace and enlightenment.

ii.Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada: A silver clutch purse from Odisha made with Tarakasi (filigree) work.

iii.President of France Emmanuel Macron: A Dokra Nandi bull sculpture from Tamil Nadu (TN), made using the traditional lost-wax method.

iv.PM of Australia Anthony Albanese: A Kolhapuri silver pot from Maharashtra, known for its detailed floral and paisley hand-engraving.

v.German Chancellor Friedrich Merz: A sandstone replica of the Konark Wheel from Odisha. This wheel is a symbol of time and movement.

vi Danielle Smith, Premier of Alberta: An ebony wood box from Rajasthan, decorated with silver inlay (Nakkashi) and a hand-painted peacock.

vii.Salma Lakhani, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta: A papier mâché box from Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), painted with bright flowers and landscapes using gold leaf work.

viii. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva: A cane and bamboo boat with a swan from Meghalaya, showcasing eco-friendly tribal craft from northeast India.

ix.South African President Cyril Ramaphosa: A brass Dokra horse from Chhattisgarh, made using the lost-wax technique.

x.South Korean President Lee Jae-myung: A Madhubani painting from Bihar. This colourful folk art, made mostly by women, features bright patterns and scenes from festivals or mythology.

xi.Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo: A Warli painting from Maharashtra, showing daily village life using basic shapes like circles and triangles.

Key Conclusions:

i.Under the Presidency of Canada, the 51st G7 Summit strengthened international cooperation by issuing joint statements in the following key areas:

  • Ensuring secure and reliable supply chains for critical minerals
  • Promoting the safe and inclusive use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • Working together on advancements in quantum technology
  • Improving ways to prevent, respond to, and recover from wildfires
  • Combating foreign influence and transnational repression
  • Taking joint action against transnational crimes, including migrant smuggling.

ii.This effort is part of the G7 Coalition and the 2024 G7 Action Plan to Prevent and Counter the Smuggling of Migrants.

1.Canada Announces Major Support Package for Ukraine:

During the closing of the 51st G7 Summit, PM of Canada Mark Carney announced over USD 2 bn in new military aid for Ukraine this year, along with a USD 2.3 bn loan under the G7 Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration (ERA) Loans mechanism.

  • He also committed an additional USD 57.4 million (mn) in security aid for Ukraine.

2.Canada Unveils Over USD 1.3 Billion G7 Investment Package:

Canada announced a series of financial commitments worth over USD 1.3 Billion to strengthen global economic systems and technological development as part of its G7 agenda:

  • USD 391.3 million to attract private capital for economic growth and development projects across the world.
  • Up to USD 185.6 million to support the adoption and commercialization of AI technologies.
  • USD 120.4 million allocated for global wildfire prevention, response, and recovery initiatives.
  • USD 80.3 million to help establish reliable supply chains for critical minerals.
  • USD 22.5 million to accelerate the development and application of quantum technologies.
  • Up to USD 544 million in loan guarantees to support new development financing in Latin America and the Caribbean.
