37th National Games Goa: Maharashtra Tops Medal Tally With 228 medals

37th National Games held in Goa from 26 October to 9 NovemberMaharashtra Finished top in the medal tally with 228 medals (80 gold, 69 silver, and 79 bronze) in the 37th edition of the National Games held in Goa from October 26th to November 9th, 2023.

  • Maharashtra won the Raja Bhalindra Singh Trophy for the overall championship in the National Games 2023, and it is also the first time Maharashtra has topped the medal tally since 1994.
  • Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) finished in second place with 126 medals (66 gold, 27 silver, and 33 bronze) while Haryana finished in third place with 192 medals (62 gold, 55 silver, and 75 bronze).

Best Male Athlete: Srihari Nataraj(Karnataka)

  • He won ten medals(8 golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze) in the swimming event.

Best Female Athlete: It was jointly awarded to gymnasts Sanyukta Prasen Kale(Maharashtra) and Pranati Nayak(Odisha).

  • Both of them won Five medals each(four golds and one silver)

Newly added Sport in 37th National Games:

Beach football, roll ball, golf, sepaktakraw, sqay martial arts, kalliyarapattu, pencak silat, Yachtin gand  taekwondo were added to the Goa National games.

Highlights of the 37th National Games:

i.Jyothi Yarraji(Andhra Pradesh), a silver medallist at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, won the gold medal in the women’s 100m hurdles with the national games record timing of 13.22 seconds.

  • Jyothi also won gold in the 4x100m relay event with Andhra Pradesh.
  • She also won the bronze medal in the 200m hurdles.

ii.The 14-year-old swimmer Dhinidhi Desinghu of Karnataka won seven gold medals including her win in the 100 m freestyle event with a new national games record of  57.87 Seconds

  • The Karnataka team comprising Srihari Nataraj, Vidith S Shankar, Nina Venkatesh, and Dhinidhi Desinghu won the gold medal in the 4x100m mixed medley event with a new national games record timing of 4:03.80 seconds.
  • swimmer Nina Venkatesh(Karnataka) won six gold medals including her gold in the  women’s 50m butterfly event with a national games record timing of 27.70 seconds

iii.Seema Punia(Haryana) won her maiden gold medal in the national games in the women’s discus throw event with a national games record throw of 52.51m.

iv.Elakkkiyadasan (Tamil Nadu) won the gold medal in both the men’s 100m race event with a timing of 10.36 seconds and the men’s 4x100m relay team event.

  • Sneha SS(Karnataka) won the gold medal in the women’s 100m race event with a timing of 11.45 seconds.

v.Tejas Ashok Shirse(Maharashtra) won the gold medal in the men’s 110m hurdles with a record timing of 13.71 seconds

vi.Priyanka Goswami (Uttar Pradesh) won the gold medal in the 20km race walk event with the new national games record timing of 1:36:35.00 hours.

vii.Sunil Joliya Jinabhai(Gujarat) won the gold medal in the men’s 3000m event with a new national games record timing of 8:37.15 seconds.

viii.A.B.Arun(SSCB) won the gold medal in the triple jump event with a national games record jump of 16.79m

ix.Anirban Ghosh(West Bengal) and Archana Kamath(Karnataka) won the men’s and women’s singles titles in table tennis.

x.Shivpal Yadav(SSCB) won the gold medal in the men’s Javelin throw event.

xi.C.A Bhavani Devi(Tamil Nadu) won the gold medal in the women’s sabre individual fencing event.

xii. Services Sports Control Board won the gold medal by defeating Manipur in the finals of the men’s football event.

  • Odisha won the gold medal by defeating Manipur in the finals of the women’s football event.

About the National Games:

i.The 2023 National Games was the first to be held in Goa in five of the following cities – Mapusa, Margao, Panaji, Ponda, and Vasco.

  • The event witnessed the participation of athletes from 28 states, 8 Union Territories, and the Services Sports Control Board in the 47 sports fields.

Previous Edition: The 36th National Games was held in Gujarat (2022) and it was topped by SSCB with 128 medals.

Next Edition: The 38th National Games is set to be held in Uttarakhand by 2024.
