Khelo India University Games

From 24th April to 3rd May 2022, the 2nd edition of  Khelo India University Games (KIUG) 2021, a national level multi-sport event was hosted by the Karnataka government, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MoYAS), and Jain University, Bengaluru (Karnataka). It was held at five venues viz. Jain Global University campus, Jain Sports School, Kanteerava Stadium, Field Marshal Cariappa Hockey Stadium, and the Sports Authority of India (SAI) National Centre of Excellence.

  • Its mascot was ‘Veera’, an elephant & the Logo of Khelo India University Games 2021 features the iconic Vidhana Soudha building – the Legislative House in Bengaluru – with two elephants on either side.
  • This edition has been won by Jain (Deemed-to-be University) with 20 gold, 7 silver and 5 bronze medals. It is followed by Lovely Professional University(LPU), Punjab won 17 gold medals, 15 silver, and 19 bronze. Defending Champions Panjab University ( Chandigarh) finished third in the medal tally with 15 gold, 9 silver, and 24 bronze medals.

Funds:

A total of Rs 52 crore is reportedly spent on the Games of which Rs 35 crore borne by the MoYAS.

Key Highlights:

i.LPU won the highest number of medals i.e. 51.

ii.The closing ceremony of KIUG was held at Sri Kanteerava Outdoor Stadium, Bengaluru. The Union Minister Amit Shah, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) was the Chief Guest of event.

iii.This event served as qualifier for World University Games scheduled to be held in Chengdu, China, from June 26, 2022.

Ann Mariya sets new National record in 87 kg women weightlifting competition

Ann Mariya from Mangalore University set a new National record in the 87 kg women weightlifting competition by lifting 129 kg to break Manpreet Kaur’s clean and jerk record of 128 kgs at the National Championships earlier this year. With a 101kg effort in snatch, Mariya, who trains at the SAI National Centre of Excellence here, won her event with a combined lift of 230kg.

Pavithra sets new pole vault mark

Pavithra Venkatesh of Periyar University (Salem, Tamil Nadu) set a new games record in women’s pole vault, scaling a height of 4.01m on the opening day of track and field competitions

  • Her mark was also a new All India Universities record, erasing her own previous mark of 4.00m, set earlier this year. 

Siva Sridhar claims 7 Gold Medals

Siva Sridhar of Jain University was the most successful athlete in the Khelo India University Games 2021, winning seven gold medals and two silvers.

  • Swimmer Shrungi Bandekar with four gold and one silver, emerged as the most successful female athlete.

Points to be noted:

i.The second edition of the Khelo India University games was supposed to be held in the year 2021 but was postponed to 2022 due to the Covid -19 in the country.

ii.The Khelo India University Games is intended to identify and train capable athletes in the age group of 18 to 25 years for the Olympics and the Asian Games.
