The winners of the 23rd Annual Laureus World Sports Awards – 2022 (Laureus22) were announced over a digital ceremony broadcasted from Seville, Spain.
The 2021 Formula One(F1) World Champion Max Verstappen, a Belgian-Dutch racing driver and the Jamaican Olympic sprinter Elaine Thompson-Herah have won the World Sportsman of the year 2022 and Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year 2022 respectively.
- This marks Max Verstappen’s first Laureus award and his 2nd nomination.

The 2022 Laureus World Sports Awards ceremony was hosted by Olympian Lindsey Vonn, the greatest women’s skier of all time.
Highlights of 2022 Awards:
i.India’s Neeraj Chopra, Athletics(Javelin), was nominated for the 2022 Laureus World Sports Awards under the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year category.
- Emma Raducanu, the British tennis player who became the first qualifier to win a grand slam, has won the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year 2022.
ii.Wheelchair racer Marcel Hug, nicknamed the “Silver Bullet”, won his career 2nd
Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with Disability award.
- He won the gold medal in 4 events at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games (800m, 1500m, 5000m and the marathon in the competitive T54 wheelchair racing class).
iii.Sky Brown, a British-Japanese skateboarder, has won the Laureus World Comeback of the Year 2022.
- She won the bronze in the women’s park skateboarding at the Tokyo Olympics and became Great Britain’s youngest (13 years old) ever Olympic medalist.
About the Laureus World Sports Awards:
i.Laureus World Sports Awards is an annual event which honours the greatest and most inspirational sporting triumphs of the year and showcases the work of Laureus Sport for Good.
ii.The inaugural awards were presented in 2000.
iii.Shortlists for 6 categories (Sportswoman, Sportsman, Team, Breakthrough, Comeback and Action) are made by votes from more than 1,000 sports media from 70 countries.
iv.The shortlist for World Athlete of the Year with a Disability is provided by the International Paralympic Committee.
v.The Laureus World Sports Academy votes for the winners in each shortlisted category and they also have the ability to grant discretionary awards, like Laureus Lifetime Achievement Award.
