Pulitzer Prize in Journalism, Books, Drama and Music announced

On 9th May 2022, the winners of the 2022 Pulitzer Prizes in Journalism; Books, Drama and Music; and Special Citations were announced. Four Indians – Adnan Abidi, Sanna Irshad Mattoo, Amit Dave, and the late Danish Siddiqui of Reuters were awarded 2022 Pulitzer Prizes in Journalism under the Feature Photography category. 

They were awarded for their images of the COVID-19 toll on India.

Note: 

The Pulitzer Prize, administered by Columbia University in New York, United States of America(USA), is considered the most prestigious prize in US journalism which recognise the work in 15 journalism categories; seven arts categories and one special citation.

Prize: Only the winner in the Public Service category of the Journalism competition is awarded a gold medal other winners receive a USD 15,000 cash award and a certificate.

The Washington Post has won the 2022 Pulitzer prize in Journalism under the Public Service category for its account of the assault on Washington on 6th January 2021.

2022 Pulitzer Prizes – Books, Drama & Music:

i.The Netanyahus: An Account of a Minor and Ultimately Even Negligible Episode in the History of a Very Famous Family’ by Joshua Cohen, a campus novel based on the story of the father of former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has won the 2022 Pulitzer Prize in Books, Drama and Music under the Fiction category. 

ii.The late artist (Painter) Winfred Rembert was awarded the 2022 Pulitzer Prize under the Biography category for “Chasing Me to My Grave: An Artist’s Memoir of the Jim Crow South,” as told to Erin I. Kelly.

2022 Pulitzer Prizes – Special Citations:

i.The Journalists of Ukraine were recognized with a 2022 Pulitzer Prize Special Citation for their courage, endurance, and commitment to truthful reporting during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. 

ii.The award recognised their effort to provide an accurate picture of the reality, honouring Ukraine and journalists around the world.

About Pulitzer Prizes: 

i.The Pulitzer Prizes were established by Joseph Pulitzer, a Hungarian-American journalist and newspaper publisher, who left money to Columbia University upon his death in 1911. 

ii.A portion of his inheritance was used to found the School of Journalism in 1912 and to establish the Pulitzer Prizes. 

iii.The Pulitzer Prizes were first awarded in 1917.
