Union Minister of Housing & Urban Affairs and Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri virtually inaugurated the 14th Edition of Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference 2021 with the theme of “Mobility for All” for achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
- Objective: To provide equitable access to affordable, clean, safe, informative, efficient and accessible transport systems for all sections of the society especially the specially-abled, women, elderly and children.
- 15th UMI conference will be held at Kochi, Kerala from 4th to 6th November 2022 with the theme of “Azadi@75: Sustainable AtmaNirbhar Urban Mobility”.
Awards for Excellence in Urban Transport:

A film titled ‘India at 75-Mobility for All’ was released at the UMI conference which focuses on Policies and practices for reframing urban mobility (so that “no one is left behind”), Gender Inclusive Urban transportation, Economic Inclusion for all, and Minimizing transport-related fatalities and air pollution emissions.
Key Facts:
i.The urban population in 2020 accounted for 56% of the total global population, which is increased from 30 percent in 1950, and is expected to increase to 60% by 2030. Of this, almost 90% is expected to be in Asia and Africa.
ii.Urbanization is the driving force behind the need for increased transportation of people and goods which is responsible for more than 30% of the world’s energy consumption.
iii.The changing mode of transport systems like Metro, MetroLite, MetroNeo, High Capacity buses, dedicated cycle lanes enhances the urban mobility policy and improves street side infrastructure.
About UMI Conference: Since 2008, it has been held annually under the aegis of MoHUA to showcase the latest developments in urban transport technology and systems, and the implementation of best transport projects.
