10th Edelgive Hurun India Philanthropy List Released; Shiv Nadar Tops

Shiv Nadar and Azim Premji top philanthropy list Edelgive Hurun IndiaOn November 2, 2023, Hurun Research Institute and EdelGive Foundation released the Edelgive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2023 in which Shiv Nadar (78) of HCL Technologies retained the title of ‘India’s Most Generous for the 3rd consecutive year as he donated Rs 2,042 crore during the FY2022-23.

  • Out of his total donation, Rs 1,774 crore for Arts and Culture and Education.
  • Azim Premji, founder chairman of Wipro, is ranked 2nd, as he donated Rs 1,774 crore and Mukesh Ambani, Chairman & Managing Director of Reliance Industries limited(RIL), is ranked 3rd with a donation of Rs 376 crore.

Note:

This is the 10th Annual ranking of the most generous individuals in India.

Assessment:

The list assessed the donations measured by the value of cash and cash equivalents from April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023.

  • It featured individuals who have donated Rs 5 crores or more.

Highlights:

i.The list comprises 119 philanthropists who cumulatively donated Rs 8445 crores. Out of these, 25 are new entrants.

ii.The total donation by the philanthropists is increased by 59% compared to 2022 and 200% compared to last 3 years.

iii.Nikhil Kamath, co-founder of Zerodha, became the youngest philanthropist on the list as he donated Rs 110 crore during FY22-23.

iv.There are 7 woman in the list led by Rohini Nilekani, founder of Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies, is the most generous woman philanthropist as she donated Rs 170 crore during the year.

v.With a donation of Rs 47 crore, K Dinesh 69, co-founder of Infosys, was the most generous new entrant in the list.

vi.The pharma industry has the largest number of philanthropists in the list of 2023, accounting for 17% while Chemicals and Petrochemicals is ranked second with 11%.

vii.By donating Rs 1290 crore more compared to 2022, Azim Premji has recorded the biggest increment in donation, followed by Shiv Nadar, who donated Rs 881 crore more compared to 2022.

viii.AM Naik (81) of L&T (Larsen & Turbo), ranked 11th for the 3rd consecutive year is India’s most generous professional manager. He donated Rs 150 crores.

Key Points:

i.Shiv Nadar donated an average of Rs 5.6 crore per day.

ii.14 individuals from India donated more than Rs 100 crore.

iii.24 individuals donated more than Rs 50 crore, up by 100%, and 47 individuals donated more than Rs 20 crore, up by 100%.

i.The 360 ONE Wealth Hurun India Rich List 2023 released in October 2023 found the cumulative wealth of 1,319 individuals had surged to Rs 109 lakh crore, surpassing the combined GDP of Singapore, UAE, and Saudi Arabia.

ii.According to the 17th edition of the Global Peace Index 2023 released by international think-tank, the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP), India has ranked at 126th position by climbing nine positions from 2022. The list is topped by Iceland.
