On June 25 2025, Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), a transformative initiative of Government of India (GoI), has completed 10 years of successful implementation.
- Launched by Prime Minister(PM) Narendra Modi on June 25, 2015, under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), the mission aims to improve the quality of life in urban cities by ensuring access to basic services like water supply, sewerage, urban transport, and parks.
About Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT):
i.AMRUT is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS), with funds shared among states and Union Territories (UTs) based on urban population and number of towns.
ii.AMRUT mission has covered 500 selected cities and towns across the country (now, 485 cities including 15 merged cities).
iii.A maximum 2.5% of project cost is required to be allocated towards developing parks with amenities for children and the elderly, thereby improving the livability of cities.
iv.Under AMRUT mission, State Annual Action Plans (SAAPs) worth Rs 77,640 crore have been approved, which also includes committed Central Assistance (CA) of Rs 35,990 crore.
- So far, works worth Rs 79,401 crore have been physically completed, and Rs 72,656 crore has been expended.
v.Key components of AMRUTÂ mission are: capacity building, reform implementation, water supply, sewerage and septage management, storm water drainage, urban transport, and the development of green parks/spaces.
Key Achievements under AMRUT:
i.Water Supply: So far, 189 lakh tap water connections have been provided against the set target of 139 lakh.
- Under this mission, 64,463 kilometer (km) of water supply network has been constructed and 4,734 Million Liters per Day (MLD) Water Treatment Plant (WTP) capacity has been developed.
- Tap water coverage increased to 70% (2025) compared to 49% (2011).
- So far, 230 water supply projects equipped with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) technology have been implemented.
ii.Sewerage & Septage Management: As per MoHUA official data, 149 lakh sewer connections were provided (against a target of 145 lakh).
- 19, 958 km of water supply network has been constructed and 4,447 MLD Sewage Treatment Treatment Plant (STP) capacity has been developed.
- So far, 146 sewerage projects equipped with SCADA technology have been implemented.
iii.Storm Water Drainage: 1,457 km of drains constructed and 3,766 waterlogging points have been removed.
iv.Green Spaces and Parks: Till date, 6,869 acres of green space has been developed and 2,994 (nearly 3,000) green parks have been created.
About AMRUT 2.0:
i.It was launched on October 01, 2021 in all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs)/cities of the country and aims to make the cities ‘self-reliant’ and ‘water secure’.
ii.One of the key focus areas of AMRUT 2.0 is to provide universal coverage of sewerage & septage management in 500 AMRUT cities.
iii.AMRUT 2.0 was launched with initial outlay of Rs 2, 99,000 crore (approximately Rs 3 lakh crore) including central share of Rs 76,760 crore for 5 years.
iv.Later, MoHUA launched the ‘Jal Hi AMRIT’ initiative under AMRUT 2.0. The initiative encourages states or Union Territories (UTs) to manage sewage plants efficiently. It also aims to treat and reuse water safely, helping to enhance water availability and support water security.
v.Technology Sub-Mission is one of the key components of AMRUT 2.0, which aims to promote start-up ideas and private entrepreneurship.
- So far, 120 start-ups have been shortlisted and 82 AMRUT cities have been mapped for pilot projects under AMRUT 2.0.
Key Objectives:
i.To achieve universal coverage of water supply in all statutory towns.
ii.To make water secure cities through rejuvenation of water bodies; urban aquifer management; rain water harvesting; and PeyJal Survekshan.
Key Achievements under AMRUT 2.0:
i.Water Supply: So far, 3,568 water supply projects worth over Rs 1.14 lakh crore and 181 lakh new tap connections have been approved.
- Also, 10,647 MLD WTPÂ capacity and 1,487 water supply projects with SCADA technology have been approved.
ii.Sewerage & Septage Management: 592 sewerage/ septage management projects worth Rs 67,607.67 crore have been approved (including O&M cost).
- Since the inception of AMRUT 2.0, 67.11 lakh new sewer connections and 6,739 MLD STP capacity approved.
- Also, 235 sewerage projects approved with SCADA technology.
Overall Key Achievements of AMRUT & AMRUT 2.0:
i.Physical Progress: Total 14,828 projects worth Rs 2,73,649 crore have been sanctioned under AMRUT and AMRUT 2.0, of which works worth nearly Rs 1,12,368 crore have been physically completed.
ii.Financial Progress: GoI had allocated a total Rs 3.77 lakh crore, of which Rs 1,02,786 was allocated as CA for projects.
- Rs 97,963 crore expended on projects by Centre/States & ULBs and Rs 47,625 crore has been released as CA for projects.
iii.Key Outcomes Achieved (Projects): Under both AMRUT and AMRUT 2.0, total 2.03 crore tap connections and 1.50 crore sewer connections have been provided.
- So far, 544 water bodies have been rejuvenated, covering 9,511 acre area.
Other Key Initiatives:
i.’AMRUT Mitra’ initiative has engaged more than 10,000 Self-Help Group (SHG) members. Under this unique initiative, 1,762 projects worth Rs 147 crore have been approved.
ii.Total 381 projects worth Rs 23,490 crore have been sanctioned under Drink from Tap (DFT), which is expected to benefit 8 lakh households across the country. Under this initiative, 3,630 contractors/officials have been trained.
- So far, 3,032 water bodies have been approved for rejuvenation, covering 1.09 lakh acre area.
iii.Over 90,000 individuals, including contractors, plant operators, plumbers, youth, and officials have been trained to support capacity-building across states.
