The World Economic Forum’s (WEF) ranked India 54th position (down from 46th in 2019) with a score of 4.1 in its Travel and Tourism Development Index 2021, but still India remains top performer within South Asia.
- Japan has topped (1) the global chart and the bottom position (117) is occupied by the country Chad.

The Theme of the WEF’s Travel and Tourism Development Index 2021 is “Rebuilding for a Sustainable and Resilient Future”.
Key Points:
i.The WEF’s Travel and Tourism Development Index 2021 is a direct evolution of the Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index, which has been published biennially for the past 15 years.
ii.The Index assesses 117 economies, based on 5 subindexes, 17 pillars and 112 individual indicators, distributed among the different pillars.
iii.The five Sub indexes are –
- Enabling Environment
- Travel and Tourism Policy and Enabling Conditions
- Infrastructure
- Travel and Tourism Demand Drivers
- Travel and Tourism Sustainability
iv.Countries that show greatest improvement in the Score are – Vietnam (+4.7%, 60th to 52nd), Indonesia (+3.4%, 44th to 32nd) and Saudi Arabia (+2.3%, 43rd to 33rd).
v.However, Malaysia (-3.0%, 29th to 38th), India (-2.6%, 46th to 54th) and Mongolia (-2.1%, 76th to 84th) had the largest declines in ranking.
vi.Other than the USA, the top 10 economies on the Travel and Tourism Development Index 2021 are the high-income economies in Europe or the Asia Pacific.
