Watchdog TI ranked India at 76 in CPI

Corruption Watchdog Transparency International (TI) has ranked India at 76th place in its Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2015 out of 168 countries with a score of 38 out of 100.

  • This indicated that the perceptions around the extent of corruption in the country are improving as compared to 85th rank in 2014 and 94th rank in 2013.
  • The corruption watchdog uses data from institutions including the World Bank, the African Development Bank and business school IMD to compile public sector corruption on scale.
  • The index grades a country on a scale from 100 (very clean) to 0 (highly corrupt).

  • Denmark has topped the index for the second consecutive year. It scored 91 points perceiving as the least corrupt country.
  • Top ranks from second to ninth were held by Finland, Sweden, New Zealand, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, Singapore and Canada.
  • The UK has been placed at 10th place with a score of 81 that tied it with Germany and Luxembourg.
  • The US has been ranked at 16th place with a score of 76, tying with Austria.
  • Brazil, Burkina Faso, Thailand, Tunisia and Zambia are sharing pace with India at 76th
  • North Korea and Somalia remained the lowest scorers with just 8 point.

Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) is an annual ranking of countries based upon their perceived levels of corruption, as determined by expert assessments and opinion surveys.

  • The CPI generally defines corruption as “the misuse of public power for private benefit”.
