“Toyota” leads the chart of Global Vehicle Sales 2015

Japanese automaker Toyota has been emerged as the world’s biggest automaker for the 4th straight year by selling 10.15 million vehicles in 2015.

  • Toyota outpaced its “diesel dupe” rivalry Volkswagen, who logged a sales of 93 million vehicles worldwide and ranks second in the global vehicle sales.
  • German automaker Volkswagen is followed by Detroit-based General Motors (GM) who has sold 8 million vehicles.

In 2014 Toyota’s global vehicle sale was trimmed to 2% in comparison with Volkswagen’s sales that were mounting 1.8% year on year while GM’s were up at 1.9%.

  • Prius hybrid, Camry sedan and Lexus luxury models brand maker Toyota has faced ups and down viz. recall fiasco* in 2009 and tsunami and quake disaster in Japan in 2011 that limped its parts-supply chain and factory production.

But its ambitious growth after all hobbles surpassed the Detroit-based automaker including Chevrolet, Opel, Buick and Cadillac, who remained the top selling automaker for more than seven decades.

  • In 2014, Toyota became the first automaker in the industry’s history to sell more than 10 million vehicles around the world in a year.

Recall fiasco* – In August, 2009, the improper installation of an all-weather floor mat from an SUV into a loaner Lexus sedan by a dealer led to the vehicle’s accelerator getting stuck, causing a tragic, fatal accident and the most challenging crisis in Toyota’s history.
