The National Good Governance Day(GGD) is observed annually on December 25, to create awareness and promote good governance in the country and its citizens. This year, the date December 25th marked the 95th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Late Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
- The National Good Governance day was first established in the year 2014 as a tribute to Vajpayee who worked for good governance.
- On December 23, 2014, Vajpayee along with Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya (posthumously) was announced as the recipient of the Bharat Ratna award (India’s highest civilian award), Following this announcement, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi led government announced to celebrate GGD.
PM Modi laid foundation stone of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University:
On GGD, Shri Narendra Modi unveiled a plaque marking the foundation stone laying ceremony of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh(UP).
i.University construction:
- The university will be constructed in the Chak Ganjaria area of Lucknow city with a cost of Rs. 200 crores.
- The university will act as an umbrella university to grant affiliation to 13 state medical colleges, 2 autonomous and non-autonomous institutions each, 22 private universities and 17 private dental colleges in UP.
ii.Members present: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister(CM) Shri Yogi Adityanath, Deputy Chief ministers and other officials were present on the occasion.
25 ft. Statue unveiled:
The Prime Minister Modi also unveiled a 25 feet bronze statue of Vajpayee in the UP govt. Building (Lok Bhavan).
i.Statue features:
- The statue weighs 5 tonnes and had cost Rs 89 lakhs.
- The statue was made by Jaipur artist named Rajkumar Pandit (Native- Bihar) under Uttar Pradesh govt’s cultural department.
- The statue was built in 6 months by a team of 65 artists.
ii.Rajkumar Pandit’s other statues:
- The tallest statue built by Rajkumar was that of Arjun, the warrior prince mentioned in the epic Mahabharata. The statue is 47 feet tall.
- This statue is installed at Maharaja Sawai Man Singh Stadium in Rajasthan.
New collectorate in Dehradun to be named after Vajpayee:
The new collectorate building in Dehradun, Uttarakhand which is to be built under Smart City Mission has been decided to be named after Vajpayee. The announcement in this regard was made by Uttarakhand CM Trivendra Singh Rawat while inaugurating the Doon Integrated Command and Control Centre in Uttarakhand.

The control centre will be built under the Smart City Mission at a cost of Rs 234.85 crore. The centre named as “Sadaiv Doon” will have a surveillance system which will assist in traffic management, pollution level inspection besides managing crowds at the 2021 Kumbh Fair.

- Dehradun ranks 25th position in the list of the country’s 100 proposed smart cities.
- Plastic usage in Dehradun has been reduced by 75%.
- Under Modi’s rule more than 1.25 lakh wellness centers have been implemented in the rural areas of the country.
- 70 lakh patients got benefited from Ayushman Bharat scheme which is a National Health Protection Scheme. Out of the 70 lakhs, 11 lakh beneficiaries were from Uttar Pradesh.
About Atal Bihari Vajpayee:
- Vajpayee was born on 25 December 1924 in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. He was an Indian politician, orator and a poet.
- He served the nation as the 10th PM.
- He died on 16 August 2018.
