Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports Announced the National Sports Awards 2021

National Sports Awards for 2021 (1)The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports announced the recipients of the National Sports Awards 2021. President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, will felicitate the awardees during the award ceremony which will be held at the Darbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhavan on 13th November 2021. 

The recipients of the National Sports Awards 2021 were recommended by the Selection Committee of the National Sports Awards 2021.

National Sports Awards:

i.The National Sports Awards are annually presented to recognise and reward excellence in sports.

ii.The National Sports Awards 2021 includes

  • Dronacharya Award,
  • Dhyan Chand Award for Lifetime achievement

Selection Committee of the National Sports Awards 2021:

The Selection Committee of the National Sports Awards 2021 was chaired by former Supreme Court Judge Justice Mukundakum Sharma.

Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award:

Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award formerly known as the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award is the highest sporting honour of India. The award is presented to recognise the spectacular and outstanding performance by a sportsperson over a period of 4 years.

  • The Khel Ratna Awards was instituted in 1991-1992.
  • The award carries a cash prize of Rs 25 Lakhs

Arjuna Awards for outstanding performance in Sports and Games:

Arjuna Award for outstanding performance in Sports and Games recognise the outstanding achievement of an individual in National Sports.

  • The Arjuna Award was instituted in 1961, named after Arjuna, a character from the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata.
  • The award carries a cash prize of Rs 15 lakh, a bronze statue of Arjuna and a scroll.

Dronacharya Award for outstanding coaches in Sports and Games, instituted in 1985, is awarded to the coaches to recognise their outstanding and meritorious work on a consistent basis and enable sportspersons to excel in International events.

  • The award is presented in 2 categories: Life-Time Category and Regular Category. 
  • The Dronacharya Award (Lifetime) carries a cash prize of Rs 15 lakh and the Dronacharya Award (Regular) carries a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh.
