1st CSC Focused Operation conducted between Maritime Security Agencies of India, Maldives and Sri Lanka

On November 27-28, 2021, the first ‘Colombo Security Conclave (CSC) Focused Operation’ was conducted between the trilateral Maritime Security Agencies viz. Indian Navy (IN), Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and Sri Lanka Navy (SLN). It saw the participation of ships and aircraft belonging to these forces, in their Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) in the Southern Arabian Sea.

Aim of CSC Focused Operation:

To keep the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) safe and secure for commercial shipping, international trade and conduct of legitimate maritime activities.

Key Points:

i.The CSC will streamline standard operating procedures (SOPs), build understanding and interoperability between these maritime security agencies by information exchange and also conduct coordinated operations to handle maritime incidents/ accidents.

ii.India is also increasing its presence in the Indo-Pacific region through Quad naval exercises which also include Japan, the United States (US) and Australia.

Background of CSC Focused Operation:

A trilateral Table Top Exercise (TTX) between IN, MNDF and SLN was conducted in July 2021. The three countries also participated in the 5th Deputy National Security Advisors (NSA) level meeting of CSC in August 2021.

  • Both events were focused on enhancing maritime security cooperation in IOR which resulted in the initiation of CSC Focused Operation.

Recent Related News:

IN and Royal Bahrain Naval Force (RBNF) participated in a bilateral Maritime Partnership Exercise at Manama, Bahrain in the Persian Gulf region. Indian Naval Ship (INS) Kochi, led by Rear Admiral Ajay Kochhar participated in the exercise.
