KVIC pays tribute to Mahatma Gandhi with world’s largest Khadi National Flag displayed at Leh
On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Radha Krishna Mathur unveiled the world’s largest National Flag, made of Khadi cotton at Leh, Ladakh. This Monumental Khadi National Flag was prepared by Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC).
- It measures 225 feet long, 150 feet wide and weighs (approx.) 1400 kg.
- KVIC has handed over the flag to the Indian Army who has displayed the flag on a hilltop in the main Leh city.
Key Points:
i.It took 49 days for 70 Khadi artisans to prepare this flag.
ii.The Ashok Chakra in the flag measures a diameter of 30 feet.
iii.It covers the total area of 33,750 square feet.

Swachh Bharat Diwas celebrated under Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen Phase 2
Under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM), Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS), Ministry of Jal Shakti organized important activities/campaigns under Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen (SBMG) Phase 2.
- Annually, DDWS celebrates Gandhi Jayanti as Swachh Bharat Diwas (SBD) strengthening the people’s movement or Jan Andolan for comprehensive cleanliness.
Key Points:
i.States and UTs (Union Territories) launched SwachhtaRaths which visited their districts/blocks for spreading mass awareness on Swachhta, effective Solid and Liquid Waste Management (SLWM) and ODF (Open Defecation Free) sustainability.
ii.Other important activities held under as a part of SBD were:
- Satyagraha Se Swachhagrah Rath Yatra: 15th September to 2nd October 2021
- Swachhta Hi Seva: 15th September to 2nd October 2021
- Swachhta Samvad: 15th August 2021 to 15th August 2022

Swachhata Hi Seva celebrated from Sep 15 – Oct 2, 2021
During the SHS 2021(Sept 15 – Oct 2, 2021), various activities were organized to promote community mobilization where over 60 lakh people participated and contributed in over 1.5 lakh Shramdaan activities.
- Government encouraged adopting suitable behaviours & action on key ODF Plus components for effective SLWM i.e. Grey Water Management (GWM), Biodegradable Waste Management (BWM), Plastic Waste Management (PWM), Faecal Waste Management (FSM) and Gobardhan.
